The Doors: Break On Through
You know the day destroys the night
Night divides the day
Tried to run
Tried to hide
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
We chased our pleasures here
Dug our treasures there
Can you still recall
The time we cried?
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side, Yeah!
C'mon, yeah
Everybody loves my baby
Everybody loves my baby
She gets, she gets
She gets, she gets
I found an island in your arms
A country in your eyes
Arms that chained us
Eyes that lied
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through, oww!
Oh, yeah!
Made the scene from week to week
Day to day, hour to hour
The gate is straight
Deep and wide
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through,
Break on through,
Break on through,
Break on through,
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Break On Through was released as the Doors' very first single in January 1967 and, as far as introductions go, it was an explosive white hot statement of purpose.
With the pop charts topped by the likes of the Monkees' I'm A Believer, the New Vaudeville Band's Winchester Cathedral and Snoopy and the Red Baron by the Royal Guardsman, the revolution-minded Break On Through came as a warning shot across the bow of the pop Zeitgeist. As it turned out, not all that many people heard the shot - the single failed to crack the Billboard Top 100. But for a band that had been collecting $10. a night in the dingiest of clubs only a year before, a record deal and a national single felt like the big time.
In essence, Jim Morrison had begun a new life for himself when he broke with his parents' wishes and transferred from Florida State University to the Theatre Arts Department of UCLA in early 1964. At UCLA he finally found a circle of friends who embraced and invigorated his voracious intellect and his desire for new experiences. By the time Jim Morrison graduated from UCLA in 1965, he had transformed himself from a shy, short haired, baby-faced student into a remarkably handsome wild-haired adventurer.
